Itinerary: Thursday, Oct. 1st (D) Our early morning motorcoach departure from Cleveland will travel to the famous Horseshoe Curve of Pennsylvania. This national historic landmark, which became one of the eight engineering marvels of the world, was completed ion 1854 by the Pennsylvania Railroad. An observation park can be reached by a 194-step stairway to view the active rail operations of Amtrak and Norfolk Southern. From the Horseshoe Curve we continue our journey to the Railroaders memorial Museum in Altooona, followed by dinner at a local restaurant. After dinner our day ends with a one (1) night hotel stay at the Fairfield Inn in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Friday Oct. 2nd (B, L, D) After our hotel breakfast and check-out from the hotel, the first scenic rail excursion of the tour begins with the East Broad Top Railroad. Completed in 1874, the East Broad Top is the only surviving three-foot narrow gauge railroad east of the Rockies. The 1-hour train ride includes a boxed lunch followed by a 1-hour railroad shop tour. From the East broad Top Railroad we travel to Cumberland, Maryland where two (2) night hotel accommodations are confirmed at the Fairfield Inn Cumberland, Dinner this evening is included.
Saturday Oct 3rd (B, L) After breakfast at the hotel, our second scenic rail excursion of the tour features the
Sunday Oct 4th (B, D) After our hotel breakfast and check-out from the hotel, we travel west to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Our destination highlights for today will include the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and the Strasburg Railroad. The museum is Pennsylvania's premier museum of railroad heritage consisting of more than 100 historic locomotives and rolling stock. Monday Oct. 5th (B, D) Our day today will be a step back in history and the American Civil War. After breakfast we travel to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and the site of the Battle of Gettysburg. The battle was fought for over three days from July 1-3 1863 and had over 50,000 combined casualties. A visit to the Gettysburg Museum of the Civil War and a guided tour of the battlefield sites will help us understand the inspiration for Abraham Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address". Tuesday Oct 6th (B, D) After our hotel breakfast the day begins with a guided sightseeing tour of picturesque Amish Farmlands. A visit to an Amish Quilt & Craft Shop located on a Amish farm will be followed by a late morning/early afternoon arrival at Kitchen Kettle Village. At kitchen Kettle Village you will find over 40 unique shops and restaurants. Be sure to visit the Jam & Relish Kitchen where you can watch artisans create jams, jellies and relishes. We return to the hotel for a couple hours of rest before going to a "Down on the Farm" Amish dinner. An authentic Pennsylvania Dutch Family Style meal will be prepared and served by an Amish family on their family farm. Wednesday Oct 7th (B) After breakfast and check-out from the hotel, we begin our return home to Cleveland. One last stop will be made at Flight 93 National Memorial. The memorial honors the 40 passengers of United Airlines Flight 93 who thwarted an attack on the U.S. Capitol on September 11, 2001.
